Seiko Prospex Tuna 'Save The Ocean' SRPG59K1

The Seiko Prospex Tuna 'Save The Ocean' SRPG59K1 goes all the way back to 1975 when the first 'Tuna' was released. A design that immediately catches the eye, due to the protective shroud that protects the body of the watch case and somewhat resembles a tuna can (hence the nickname!).Ā

This model is outspoken, but also very comfortable. Traditional watch design is of course very rectangular, but when you take a more rounded shape it also means it will fit nicely to the center of your wrist. The SRPG59K1 is a mere is 43.2mm in diameter, but the lug to lug distance is a mere 44mm. That means while it is big in diameter, the vertical distance is closer to what a 38-40mm watch would feature.Ā

The theme for this special edition isĀ Antarctica, as you can likely tell by the colour scheme. But the stunning dial carries some very fun, cheerful penguin footprints details. Not something you've likely seen before on a watch dial! And this Tuna is alsoĀ part of the 'Save The Ocean' line, of which Seiko makes several designs, in collaboration Fabien Cousteau, the grandson of the legendary ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau. A portion of the sales from these timepieces are donated to ocean conservation efforts.

However before we get too caught up with what this watch is about, we shouldn't forget that it is also a very good... watch! It features an in-house made mechanical (automatic)Ā Seiko Cal.Ā 4R35 movement - a good, reliable workhorse movement that will keep on ticking! The stunning dial is protected by the Seiko Hardlex mineral glass and you can use this beauty up to 200m.Ā

Special, comfortable, interesting, strange, practical and carrying a rich pedigree. Definitely not your average watch, but it's better to be a tuna than average!
